Bollywood and music always go hand-in-hand. The better the music is the bigger hit the film turns out to be. Many super-hit films have been remembered for the great music that captured the fancy of the audiences. Even as general Bollywood dramas boast of some great music, films based on musicians have music that is a step higher.

There have been some well-received films that were made based on musicians in Bollywood. 

The audience seem to love the stories of passionate musicians and their rise to the top of the music world. These films have had extra-special music that includes evergreen hits. Let us look at some such movies here. 

Baiju Bawra

This classic movie is based on a young singer set in the days of Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great. The movie was directed by Vijay Bhatt and starred Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari. With amazing performances from the lead pair and the melodious music, the songs have been some of the most-loved songs in Bollywood.


This movie starred Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Baduri. The movie traces the story of a popular singer who encourages his wife to take up a singing career as well. As the wife’s carer takes over his own, the couple face challenges in their relationship. Directed by one of the most acclaimed directors Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the movie is known for top-class music by S.D.Burman.


Made by the showman of Bollywood Subhash Ghai, this film starring Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna was a runaway hit for its entertaining content and the super-hit music by A.R.Rahman. The movie’s story revolves around Mansi who hails from the hills and sigs from her heart. How she becomes a singing sensation forms the rest of the story.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

Starring Aishwarya Rai, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, this film had the perfect ingredients for an engrossing drama. 

The film is about a traditional Hindustani musician family that welcomes an NRI student. As love blossoms between the student and the teacher’s daughter, the engrossing story ensues along with excellent music.


Known as one of the most underrated films in Bollywood, Sur is an out-and-out musical film with some very talented actors and musicians. The film was directed by Tanuja Chandra and starred Lucky Ali and Gauri Karnik in lead roles. The story had a master musician hunting for a worthy student to hone into a successful musician.

Aashiqui 2

During a time when most of Bollywood songs were party tracks or fast-paced numbers, the songs of Aashiqui 2 popularized melodious music. A whole new generation of youngsters were swaying to the tunes of Aashiqui 2 that was a complete love story with full-on romance and highly-charged emotions. The film made the lead actors Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Kapur overnight stars and is one of the most loved love stories of the present times.


Rockstar is a movie that will make you invest all your emotions into it. This musical romantic drama has amazing songs by A.R.Rahman and is directed by Imtiaz Ali. The movie is about a guy who is passionate about making it as a rock-star like his role-model Jim Morrison. His life turns topsy-turvy when his lady love disappears from his life and later dies. Being connected to the reason behind her death, the protagonist faces a whole range of emotions before he is liberated by music. The songs from this movie have made fans crazy.

There have been many more such films and Bollywood seems to love stories of musicians. Apart from the few mentioned here, hits like Rock On!, Soundtrack, Karz, etc are also loved.
