Just as an athlete needs to pay attention to his or her diet to compete successfully in a race, we too need to pay attention to our diet to be healthy and happy.
Nobody can take good care of your health better than yourself. And closely connected to good health are calories that are contained in different foods. It’s, therefore, important that you understand these calories that are contained in the food you eat.
We’re going to talk about some juicy and delicious facts about calories to help you take good care of your health.
What is a calorie?
A calorie is simply a unit of energy. And the amount of energy that our body gets from one type of food is determined by the number of calories that it contains.
Even though calories are a measure of energy, these calories are not similar in different foods. Why? This is because different foods produce different effects in our body. How?
Let’s give an example. An apple contains 100 calories that are categorised very healthy to your body. But when you talk of a doughnut, the story is different. Although a doughnut has the same 100 calories like an apple, its’ calories are not classified as very healthy for your body.
Is there such a thing as good and bad calories?
What comes to your mind when you hear the word “carbohydrates”? Some people don’t think highly of these carbohydrates nor do they have kind words for them.
But is it really true that any kind of carbohydrate is bad in our diet? No, because carbohydrates contain necessary vitamins, minerals and fibre - and our bodies dearly need these!
What are some of these carbohydrates? Legumes, nuts, whole grains and beans. They contain vitamins, minerals and fibre that are vital for us. How?
For our bodies to function or operate well, we need the vitamins. Thus, without them our basic bodily functions would be impaired.
And what’s one reason you want to eat a meal? Is it not to feel full or satisfied (among many other reasons)? That’s exactly the job that fibre in the carbohydrates performs! You’ll feel full or satisfied after eating carbohydrates until sometime later when you’re hungry!
How many times have you heard people say that fibre helps us to go to the bathroom? And so whenever we eat some carbohydrates we don’t eternally feel full or bloated. It’s because fibre helps us go to the toilet!
What does that mean? It means that these foods, despite having a high content of calories, are not really bad calories. They are good for our bodies!
What are some healthy facts about fruits and vegetables?
- We need to eat more fruits and vegetables in our diet than any other food. And we just need a little amount of protein in our diet for growth and for building our muscles.
How do fruits and vegetables benefit our health? The content of water in fruits is huge, and our bodies love this and they make good use of this. And the result?
- The result is that our bodies are completely kept hydrated. This helps to minimise feeling hungry. Additionally this assists our blood to move easily while carrying oxygen to key organs of our bodies.
- They contain vitamin C that helps protect our bodies.
- What do fruits and vegetables contain that makes us enjoy eating them? They have a low content of calories and a high content of nutrients. And that’s why we love this type of diet!
What are some solid facts about fats?
- You need to keep in mind that not all fats are alike.
- Some fats contain good vitamins and vital omega-3 fatty acids that are vital in a good diet (e.g. avocado has 227 calories!)
- Omega-3 fatty acids help to lessen lipoproteins in the bloodstream. If lipoproteins are high, they heighten cholesterol and blood pressure.
- Omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in keeping your skin soft and tender.
- These omega-3 fatty acids are good for the health of your heart.
What are some delicious facts about proteins?
- Proteins help build and maintain our muscles. Clearly, our bodies need a little amount of proteins.
- Fish is an excellent source of protein because it is low in calories and high in the essential fatty acids necessary to support the health of our heart and reduce bad cholesterol.
- You need to eat food higher in protein content in very small amounts.
- What are some examples? Eggs, nuts, meat and poultry. These do contain a higher number of calories.
The facts above plainly show that our bodies need what is termed as bad and good calories in our diet!
