The recent unfortunate event on February 14, 2019, where a convoy carrying CRPF personnel on the Jammu-Kashmir highway was bombed by a vehicle-borne suicide bomber in the Pulwama district has led to distress across the nation.
Due to this attack, more than 40 CRPF personnel are reported to have sacrificed their life for the nation.
Since this fateful day, many have wondered what the CRPF is or what were the CRPF personnel doing on the border while the army is stationed at the LOC?

What is CRPF?
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is India's largest Central Armed Police Forces. It is also known as the paramilitary force under the umbrella of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Government of India.
The main role of the CRPF is to assist the state and the union territories to maintain law and order and to contain insurgency. They also play a major role in security arrangements during any sort of unrest or violence or conflict in any state/UT especially during the elections in some volatile states.
As of 2017, CRPF is considered India's largest, with a strength of more than 300,000 personnel, with 239 battalions and various establishments. Till date, 1997 brave soldiers of CRPF have made the supreme sacrifice of their lives in the service of the Nation.
CRPF has a glorious history of 78 years and came to existence as Crown Representative’s Police on July 27, 1939.
What are the roles and responsibilities of CRPF personnel?

- Overall coordination of large scale security arrangement especially with regard to elections in disturbed areas

Training to be a CRPF personnel
The training of a CRPF personnel is one of the toughest you can ever endure. The Force is trained to perform duties for variety of tasks. The ever changing tasks assigned to these officers demand very high state of training.
They are put through systematic and well researched training curriculum both outdoors and indoors. They undergo extensive jungle exercises for operations against anti-national elements. They are also trained for internal security and global terrorism.
Physical fitness is one of the most important aspects, however, they are trained for professional ethics and commitment to the force as well. Experienced trainers lead by example, and train the newbies with various training modules to tackle the most difficult tasks.
There are many battalions of the CRPF who are among the best of the best, but there are 3 units which stand out due to their line of duty and their training.
a) RAF -
The Rapid Action Force (RAF) is a zero repose force, they are trained to attend a crisis situation within minimal time. They induce sense of security and confidence among the general public.
b) CoBRA -
The Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) was added to the CRPF in 2008, to counter attack the Naxalite movement. This unit is specialized and trained in guerilla warfare, which is why they are undoubtedly among the best in the country.
c) Commandos -
The Commando 469 unit is among the most elite. The personnel are trained in counter-terrorism, reconnaissance, and sabotage. Only the best are selected for this unit and they undergo rigorous training for years. When they are done with the training, they are among the most competent and toughest men and women in the forces. The Commandos are specialized to carry out covert operations.
