Plastic is one of those inventions of man that made all our lives much easier, comfortable and hassle-free. Today, plastic has permeated into all areas of our lives from food to medicine.

However, the effect of such rampant use of plastic is causing a lot of adverse effects on the planet. There is already a huge amount of plastic waste floating on oceans and dumped in landfills that will take thousands of years to decompose. In this time, it causes a lot of harm to the eco-system. So, plastics have to be used to a minimal extent and replacing these plastic products in our lives is important.

One of the omnipresent products that we use today is the water bottle. It helps us carry water with us all the time and thus helps keeps ourselves hydrated and healthy. But, knowing the ill-effects of plastics, it is time that we started looking for healthier alternatives to plastics. Here are a few such alternatives to switch to.

Terracota

Terracota is a material that has been in existence from centuries ago. It is a mud-based material and is very easy to make in different shapes and sizes. It is totally eco-friendly as the process of making it as well as the disposal is totally in tune with nature. It even purifies the water and keeps the temperature of water cool naturally. The only disadvantage is that it is fragile and gets broken if not handled properly. Also, it is definitely heavier than plastic bottles.

Copper

Copper is a metal that is known to mankind for many centuries too. It is malleable as well as durable and is believed to impart medicinal qualities to water as well. Many health enthusiasts also recommend copper water bottles today. It is a great choice as you don’t have to worry about breakage. The weight is definitely higher than plastic bottles but that is only a small disadvantage when compared to the advantages. However, make sure to choose a copper bottle that is authentically made and is safe to use as metal leeching into water can be dangerous.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is a safe bet when it comes to water bottles. It is non-plastic, sturdy, and safe and you need not worry about whether it will break if you drop it. There are different types of stainless steel bottles available and you can choose the kind of bottle that will suit your needs and preferences.

Production of steel bottles is energy-intensive but they last longer than plastic or glass bottles. Just make sure to maintain general hygiene by washing the bottle regularly.

Bamboo

Bamboo water bottles are quite popular these days amidst people who want to switch to non-plastic alternatives. Bamboo is a very durable material and is very suitable for water bottles. Many bamboo bottles do have a mix of other materials like a glass inner wall or metal caps to make it leak-proof, more convenient, etc. However, pure bamboo bottles are also available if you take the time to look up.

Glass

We all are familiar with glass bottles and they were the most popular kind of bottles for beverages until plastics took over. So, it is quite obvious that glass bottles are a good alternative to plastic bottles. Breakages are a concern but if handled with a little care, glass can make for great water bottles that are easy to clean, do not leech and are relatively non-expensive as well. To offset the risk of breakage, many manufacturers are adding sleeves made of other sturdier materials for added convenience as well.
