The Wonder-Woman from Chennai, who's Lighting up Lives and touching HeartsMay 10, 2018
Amid the booming entrepreneurs and peers of her age who are busy checking their bank accounts, she is showing the way for people like us that one's real asset is spreading smiles and living for the welfare of the people.
Be it feeding the underprivileged people in the streets under ''Share with Care'' or empowering Govt. school students through knowledge transfer sessions under ''Sudaroli'' or beautifying the city and its key public places under ''Varnam'', what amuses us is her burning desire to touch people's lives and it has only got bigger ever since the inception of her NGO ''The Candles'' back in 2014.
Being a pious religious person and humble in nature, she owes her art of giving to her husband Mr. Arun , to whom she attributes her every ounce of success and glory. But for him Candles would have been just a dream, she says.
An alumni of Stella Maris College, she was clear about being a professional social worker even during her college days and was never afraid about getting her hands dirty and hitting the field to get to the very bottom of social issues.
She feels that her field experience as a student has kept her in a good stead and every project that's rolled under candles starting from'' Varnam'' which is about changing the untidy notion of city's public places to ''Sudaroli'' that empowers Govt students and plugs the learning gap between them and private schools is an inspiration.
Contrary to the people of top management, who have a penchant for hefty lifestyle, what amuses us is that she loves to lead from the front, be it cooking for her community children or taking a seminar about a sensitive topic like menstrual hygiene, she is game for everything.
When most of the NGOs are whining about the lack of funds or man power, nothing has deterred her determination and her recent initiative ''Wound Care on Wheels'', cleaning and dressing up the wounds of leprosy affected people is a classic example, where all she needed was a medical kit and a two wheeler and she was up and running.
As a voracious social worker, though at times she struggles to make the ends meet, nothing has deterred her will to enlighten the lives of people. She quickly retorts that money comes secondary and all we need is love and a little empathy, which will take care of everything else.
She credits the success of her organisation to the unsung leaders and the selfless volunteers whom she claims to be the backbone of the organization. She takes pride in the diversity of the group, from a little kid to 60-year old veterans, her group is not just versatile but also dynamic.
While most of the youngsters love late-night parties, their volunteers hit the streets in the night to beautify the cities ,while weekend movies is a norm in most of the youngsters, their volunteers would be busy putting street-plays and educating the audience on the sensitive issues which are the need of the hour.
Today, more than 500 children Viz., Sudaroli project & 300 students Viz,. Amudhasurabhi (providing nutrient porridge to Govt school) children gets benefited, which is mind-boggling given the fact that they are not even a two digit member organization and what's so inspiring is that she has managed to hold the fort despite the lack of proper donors.
A brief interaction with her and you will find her as humble and simple, she is someone who's truly god-sent to spread the smiles and lighten up the lives of the people.
